France: Ancien Régime to Napoleon traces the transformation of France from the end of Louis XIV’s reign through the Enlightenment, the Revolution, and the Napoleonic Empire. The breadth study structure requires students to assess change and continuity in French society, politics, and culture across a century of profound transformation — from absolute monarchy to republic to empire and back.

What the exam asks
Unit 3 is a Breadth Study. Questions require students to assess change and continuity across the full chronological range of the option (c.1715–1815). Strong answers make direct comparisons between different phases — ancien régime, revolution, empire — sustaining an argument about overall patterns of change rather than narrating events. The ability to select precise evidence from multiple points across the timeline is essential.
Historiography
The major interpretive debates relevant to this option include:
- The causes of the Revolution: Marxist class conflict (Soboul, Lefebvre) vs revisionist rejection (Furet, Cobban); the role of Enlightenment ideas
- The Terror: contingent emergency or inherent in revolutionary logic?
- Napoleon: moderniser and heir of the Revolution, or conservative autocrat who betrayed it?
