About this option
Y213 covers France from the crisis of the ancien régime through revolution, the Terror, the Directory, and the Napoleonic Empire. The period study structure requires students to assess change across four decades of upheaval — from absolute monarchy to republic to empire — and to engage with one of the most contested historiographical traditions in European history.

What the exam asks
Component 2 is a Non-British Period Study. Questions require breadth across the full chronological period; source analysis and interpretation in context are central to the paper. Essays assess change and continuity across a long arc and reward candidates who select precise evidence from multiple points in the period — rather than narrating events in sequence.
Historiography
This option has one of the richest historiographical traditions in European history. The major debates include:
- The causes of the Revolution: Marxist class conflict (Soboul, Lefebvre) vs revisionist rejection (Furet, Cobban); Schama’s narrative revision in Citizens
- The Terror: contingent emergency response to war and invasion, or inherent in the logic of the Revolution?
- Napoleon: heir of the Revolution or its betrayer?
