About this option
Y314 examines the development of German nationalist ideology from the Napoleonic era to the defeat of 1918, tracing how nationalist sentiment evolved from Romantic cultural movement to political force and military ambition. The thematic structure requires sustained engagement with how nationalism changed in character across more than a century and how different political contexts — revolution, reaction, unification, empire — shaped its expression and consequences.

What the exam asks
Component 3 is a Thematic Study with Historical Interpretations. Questions require students to assess change and continuity across the full chronological range of the option (1789–1919) and to engage directly with how historians have interpreted the nature and significance of German nationalism. Strong answers make direct comparisons between different periods, sustain a coherent argument about overall patterns, and evaluate named interpretations — rather than simply narrating events.
