About this option
Germany, 1871–1990: United, Divided and Reunited traces the history of the German state from Bismarckian unification through the Kaiserreich, Weimar, the Nazi dictatorship, division, and reunification. The thematic structure requires students to assess change and continuity in German political identity, state power, and society across more than a century of transformation. It is one of the most chronologically ambitious options on the Edexcel specification and demands sustained engagement with what changed and what persisted across radically different regimes.

What the exam asks
Paper 3 is a Thematic Study: questions require students to assess change and continuity across the full chronological range of the option (1871–1990). Essays typically ask how far a particular factor shaped Germany’s political development, or how consistently a feature characterised the period across different phases and regimes. Strong answers select precise evidence from multiple points across the timeline and sustain an argument about the overall pattern — rather than narrating events in sequence. The ability to make direct comparisons between different regimes is rewarded.
