About this option
France in Revolution, 1774–99 focuses on the causes and course of the French Revolution from the crisis of the ancien régime to Napoleon’s seizure of power. The depth study structure asks students to work analytically within a compressed timeframe: why did the world’s most powerful monarchy collapse in 1789, what drove the Revolution towards the Terror, and how did the Directory give way to Napoleon? The option has exceptional historiographical depth.

What the exam asks
Paper 1 Depth Studies require analytical depth within a short chronological period. Questions focus on causation, significance, and judgement: why did events happen, what mattered most, and how should the period be characterised overall? Strong answers engage directly with historical debate and sustain a precise argument rather than surveying events broadly. The ability to challenge or qualify a given interpretation is rewarded.

This option has one of the richest historiographical traditions on the specification:
- The causes of the Revolution: Marxist interpretation (Soboul’s bourgeois revolution) vs Furet’s revisionist rejection; Cobban’s social interpretation
- The Terror: inherent in revolutionary ideology vs emergency response to war and invasion; Schama’s narrative revision in Citizens
- The Directory: failed experiment or necessary stabilisation?
