Y313 examines the rise of France to European dominance under Richelieu, Mazarin, and Louis XIV, tracing the construction of absolute monarchy, the suppression of internal opposition, and the projection of French power across Europe. The thematic structure requires students to assess change and continuity in French governance and power across more than a century, from the aftermath of the Wars of Religion to the death of the Sun King.

What the exam asks
Component 3 is a Thematic Study with Historical Interpretations. Questions require students to assess change and continuity across the full chronological range of the option (1610–1715) and to engage directly with how historians have interpreted the nature and development of French power. Strong answers make direct comparisons between different rulers and ministers, sustain a coherent argument about overall patterns, and evaluate named interpretations rather than simply narrating events.
