Re-reading notes feels like revision because it is effortful and produces a sense of familiarity — the material looks known, the pages feel navigated. But familiarity is not the same as recall. When you sit in an exam and try to retrieve what you revised, familiarity does not help you. What helps is the ability to actively reconstruct knowledge — to pull information out of memory without the prompt of the page in front of you. Re-reading builds familiarity. It does not build retrieval.


The fluency illusion

Cognitive psychologists call the re-reading trap the fluency illusion: material that has been read several times feels fluent and accessible, which students interpret as evidence that they know it. But fluency while reading — the smooth, easy processing of familiar text — is not the same as the ability to retrieve and use that material independently. The test of whether you know something is not whether it looks familiar when you see it; it is whether you can produce it when you need it.

The mismatch between felt fluency and actual recall is why students who spend hours re-reading notes often perform worse in exams than they expected. They revised — they just revised in a way that practised recognition rather than retrieval.


What the research says

Memory research consistently shows that retrieval practice — actively trying to recall information, usually through testing yourself — produces significantly better long-term retention than re-reading the same material. The key finding, confirmed across many studies, is that the act of retrieval itself strengthens memory: struggling to recall something consolidates it more effectively than reading it again.

Spacing also matters. Revision spread across multiple sessions with gaps between them (‘spaced practice’) produces better retention than the same total time spent in a single block (‘massed practice’, or cramming). Cramming can produce short-term performance on a test the next day; it produces poor retention a week later.


What to do instead

The most effective revision strategies for history all involve active retrieval — producing information rather than consuming it.
