Best Podcasts on the War in the Pacific and Asia 1941–45
The war in the Pacific and Asia was a conflict of staggering scale and brutality, fought across thousands of miles of ocean and jungle from Pearl Harbor to the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For Britain, the fall of Singapore in February 1942 — the largest surrender in British military history — shattered the myth of imperial invincibility. For the United States, the Pacific war ended only when the decision was taken to deploy the most destructive weapons in human history. This collection examines the Pacific war from the collapse of British power in South-East Asia through to the final days of imperial Japan.
Part One: The Fall of British Asia 1941–42
In the weeks after Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces moved with devastating speed across South-East Asia, overrunning British, American, and Dutch colonial territories that had been considered secure. The fall of Malaya and Singapore in early 1942 — achieved by a Japanese force that was outnumbered but brilliantly led — remains one of the most dramatic military reversals in modern history. These episodes examine how Britain lost its empire in Asia in a matter of weeks.
Part Two: The Road to Hiroshima 1944–45
By 1944, American forces had turned the tide of the Pacific war through a strategy of island-hopping that brought B-29 bombers within range of the Japanese home islands. The battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa demonstrated that Japan would resist invasion with fanatical determination, inflicting enormous casualties. This calculation — that an invasion of Japan itself would cost hundreds of thousands of Allied and Japanese lives — shaped the decision to use atomic weapons. These two episodes, based on an Explaining History interview with historian David Dean Barrett, examine the 140 days that led from the Yalta conference to the atomic bombs.
